ENVIRONMENTAL SUMMARY

Reading Festival is located just outside Reading, UK -- approxmately 2.5 km / 1.5 mi from city centre and just 1 km from the Reading train station.

Transportation:

Over 67% of the audience used public transport to reach Reading Festival last year. The train station is a 10 minute walk to the festival or a short ride on the festival shuttle bus. The festival also paired up with liftshare.com to encourage car sharing for those who drive.

Energy:

All festival energy was supplied by a combination of diesel and waste vegetable oil biodiesel generators.

Recycling:

Backtage area recycling options included metal, timber, plastics, glass, cigarette butts, and batteries. Cups, aluminium cans, and plastic bottles were collected for recycling throughout the audience area during and after the festival. Special recycle exchanges were setup in the camping areas to collect metal, batteries, and unwanted camping equipment for recyling or donation to charity.

Catering:

Caterers provided washable plates, cutlery, cups for all meals. Uncooked food scraps were collected for composting. Take away packaging was made from fully compostable materials. As with almost all of our shows, water coolers were provided for use with refillable water bottles.

Other green initiatives/issues:

The festival adopted various incentive programs to encourage audience recycling. Those who collected a bag full of beer cans were rewarded with a free can of beer. A manditory 20p deposit for water bottles and 10p for drink cups and cup trays were included with all sales. All festival-provided shower and hand soap was eco-friendly.

Many thanks to Juliette Baldry, Melvin Benn, Julie's Bicycle, and all at Festival Republic for their logistical support.
