ENVIRONMENTAL SUMMARY
Praça Da Apoteose is part of the larger Sambadrome venue area. The square is used for samba performances/parades (including Carnival) and as a public school for neighborhood children.
Parking:
There was no vehicle parking available at the venue. The promoter made arrangements with the city to keep the Metro running until 1am to accommodate concert attendees, instead of the usual 11pm shut time. There were multiple bus and metro options for reaching the venue.
Energy:
All electricity was supplied by diesel-powered generators. We were unable to source recycled waste oil bio diesel in the area.
Recycling:
Recycling in Rio de Janeiro has different social implications than in other cities that we have performed. Rio de Janeiro has some of the highest recycling percentages in the world due to the large number of low income people who live off income derived from turning in recyclable materials. Social programs encourage recyclable materials to be sold or exchanged for discounted food and electricity credit.
Recycling stations were setup throughout backstage.
Catering:
Caterers provided washable plates and cutlery for all meals. Large water coolers were provided for use with our refillable water bottles, though sealed individual-sized water cups were also available.
Concessions:
Against promoter and band request, the concessionaires used styrofoam cups for soft drinks resulting in an unfortunate sea of trash at the end of the gig. The styrofoam and plastic beer cups were immediately collected to prevent their spread to neighborhood areas and as much will be recycled as possible.
Other green initiatives/issues:
Friends of the Earth Brazil (Núcleo Amigos da Terra) were welcomed participants at both of our Brazilian shows. You can read more about their work here: http://www.natbrasil.org.br/
Many thanks to Marta, Flavia, and all at Plan Music for their help.
